Freshen Up for Spring

Freshen Up Your Home for Spring

Spring is here, which means it's time to start your spring cleaning. Here are some tips for freshening and organizing your home, with examples from your favourite Lanark Landing showhomes!

The Living Room

Start to add some pops of colour to lighten up your family room. Swapping the winter throw blankets and pillows for lighter, colourful tones will change the room drastically. Brighten the space with natural light by keeping the blinds open and deep cleaning your windows inside and out to let that natural Airdrie sunshine spread throughout the whole home. To upkeep your organization, implement “tidy spaces” by adding accent wicker or felt baskets to cut down on clutter. See how The Jefferson showhome by Homes By Avi uses the large bay windows to create a bright and open space, alongside blue and beige tones with wicker textures. These small, simple changes make the room feel energized and organized.

The Kitchen

Keeping the kitchen fresh, clean, and colourful is a perfect way to bring the spring weather inside. For a pop of colour, consider adding a bowl of freshly washed fruit to your counter and a small herb garden to your kitchen to freshen up the air and your cooking. Organize your cupboards and take your large appliances off the countertops. By keeping the counter space clean and open and all stainless-steel appliances wiped and tidy, the whole area will feel larger and more organized. The Glasgow kitchen by Douglas Homes shows how much fresh fruit can add to your space, accenting the room with a bowl of oranges. By keeping the rest of the counter space clean, it allows the sun to reflect the quartz surfaces and create the ideal spring kitchen.

The Bedroom

The key to sprucing up your bedroom is changing out colours and textures. Take out the heavier sheets and opt for lighter fabrics. While changing the bed set, give the room a good dusting and swap darker window coverings for a translucent style of drapes. Adding fresh flowers or low-maintenance plants will make it a peaceful and organized place for you to begin and end your day. The Ramsay showhome by Sterling Homes styles the bedroom with a bright palette and accents with fresh flowers in colourful vases to make the room feel clean and uplifting.

The Bathroom

Keep things fresh in your bathroom with a simple swap of towels. Change over the darker tones for something brighter, like a light-coloured bathmat. Adding elements of nature will also help keep the bathroom feeling fresh. Low-maintenance succulents, candles, hand soap and Epsom salts will bring the room to life. Update the bathroom towels and soaps to maintain a clean setup. The Londonderry by McKee Homes exemplifies the power of minimalism with clean white towels accented with a small plant, décor, and other small items to create a spotless area.

The Mudroom

The mudroom plays a critical role in the spring and summer months. Ensure there are enough hooks, shelves, and baskets to keep things organized and a rug to keep the dirt from tracking into the home. Remove winter clothes and accessories that aren’t needed for the coming months and store them in ‘out-of-the-way’ bins or shelves. The Braemar showhome by Castellano Custom Homes uses a combination of hooks, shelves and overhead and underneath storage to keep clutter away and stay organized. The home keeps a sense of theme and decor in the mudroom with unique storage containers including wooden crates with white text, and black wicker containers.

Spring is here! Start these incredible warm months the right way with a good freshening up and cleaning of your home. Get ready to embrace all the amazing things to do this spring here in Lanark Landing!

The roundabouts are decoratively lit and landscaped to tie the community theme together. With parks on every block connected to local and regional pathways, getting around is easy! These parks feature lounge chairs, benches, playground equipment, pergolas, lush plantings and lighting for your nighttime stroll. There are also amphitheatres, picnic tables, a basketball court, pump track, four-season gathering space with shelter, community gardens & orchards and a community fire pit – so many ways to meet your neighbours!

The future school site has sports fields and a boarded rink for four-season fun. The landscaped storm pond features multiple plazas with seating and pergolas and is connected to the regional multi-use trail system as well.

Lanark Landing features multiple seating areas throughout the numerous parks, trails and green spaces along with pergolas, picnic tables and fire pits or tables. At the heart of it all is a four-season community gathering centre with a community garden, orchard and pump track for the kids.

Plentiful trails that tie into the regional multi-use trail system make Lanark Landing super walkable. Walk to school or ride your bike to pick up groceries or do a few errands at the nearby commercial node offering all shops and services. Green street homes face small parks, or green streets, instead of roadway.

Melcor plans communities with water conservation in mind. SWMF reuses stormwater for irrigation, and overflow water is discharged back to the creek at normal runoff rates to avoid flooding.

There are many reasons to move to Lanark Landing. In Lanark Landing, live somewhere your kids will love.

Tips and Tricks for your Treats

How to Stay Safe this Halloween

Trick-or-treating is a great way to meet your neighbours, and connect with other residents that live in Lanark Landing. This year though, it’s a good idea to take some precautions. As pumpkins are getting carved and porches adorned with scary decorations, the neighborhood is full of spirit and anticipation approaching another pandemic holiday. By taking simple and easy precautions advised by Alberta Health Services, you can continue to celebrate a safe and healthy Halloween.

The best part about trick-or-treating is that it takes place outside, the forecast this Sunday calls for a colder evening ensure you are bundling up with mittens and warm clothes. Celebrating outdoors keeps transmission at low risk. Individuals must ensure that costumes covering the face can accommodate a nonmedical face mask underneath. While trick-or-treating, choose to travel in smaller groups including a cohort, members of the same household, or ensure maintenance of 2 meters social distance. Before trick-or-treating, ensure yourself and members of your household are not showing any symptoms; it is important to stay home if you are feeling ill. Remember to sanitize hands frequently, especially before handling or eating any candy and avoid high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs and doorbells. Warm up your voice and ensure that you can call our “trick-or-treat “from 2 meters away!

 Handing Out Candy

If you are feeling ill or isolating, you must abstain from handing out candy. To prohibit any form of transmission, ensure you wear a face mask, advise trick-or-treaters to maintain distance from entering your household, and choose pre-packaged candy. Alberta Health Services promotes creativity when handing out candy this year, giving options to use tongs, set up on your front lawn, distanced candy arrangements and even candy catapults! Allow yourself to get creative while staying safe.

Halloween Parties

Before planning or attending a party, review the current gathering restrictions and monitor your symptoms. If you are feeling ill or on self-isolation, stay home. If possible, host or attend parties outdoors or at indoor locations where individuals can maintain safe distances from one another. Set up games that are minimal in contact with one another and ensure no sharing of food, drinks, vapes, etc.  Most importantly, BYOHS, if you are attending a party, ensure you bring your own hand sanitizer. If you are hosting a party, provide ample locations for hand washing and sanitizing.

Stay Safe, Stay Spooky. Happy Halloween from Lanark Landing! 🎃

Preparing Your Garden for Spring

Spring Garden Preparations

Spring is here! The sun is up for longer, and life is returning to the garden after a long and cold winter. There's so much to do during these spring months, so we thought we'd compile a to-do list of everything you need to get your garden prepared for the summer. Here is your guide to preparing your garden and getting that yard in perfect condition for the summer to come.

Foundation First

Start with the ground up. The lawn is usually the first eyesore after the snowmelt, so it’s probably the first thing you’ll want to tackle. The key is to resist the urge to strip it all away. A light fan brushing of the leaves is safe, but try to avoid any heave raking or scraping as the ground is still moist and you will risk exposing the lawn to more weeds and dead areas.

Now is the time to start brushing away the needles and debris from the soil. Over the winter, the garden dirt gets down packed by a heavy layer of snow, so dig around and get some air into it again. While the soil is still moist, pull up all the dandelions and weeds that survived the winter. While the soil is moist like this, you have a better chance of pulling the whole taproot to prevent weed regrowth and flowering.

Nutrients Nutrients Nutrients

When you think May, think mulch! Think fertilizer, and think compost. Winter tends to wash away all soil amendments, leaving your garden in much need of restoration. Apply mulch to the bases of your plants; this will protect the roots and retain soil moisture as you head into the hot summer months. You can also add fertilizer and compost to your soil and lawn for extra nutrients.

 Prep the Plants

Now for the fun part, and the real reason why we need to prep the yard - the plants!

1) Prune it

It’s important to prune anything that has not begun budding or blossoming.  Pruning for summer-blooming shrubs is best done earlier in the season, as pruning a tree or bush in its budding phase will risk killing it. Your spring-blooming shrubs can wait until they have fully blossomed for any trimming needs.

2) Plan it

The gardening process can be overwhelming at this time of year as you look over a lawn of bleak brown soil and half-alive grass. The key is to make a plan! Now is a great time to plan where you want to put plants in advance, making note of where the sunny spots and the shady spots are in your yard. Knowing the climate and soil quality will help you choose the right plants and put plants in places they will thrive. For example, if you have a spruce tree near a flower bed in your yard, that soil will be more acidic from the fallen needles than another spot in the yard. Check plant tags to find the right plant for the specific amount of sun and style of soil.

3) Plant it

Although it’s early in the season, there are a few things you can begin planting to feed that gardening craving. Now is the time to seed your hardy vegetables: we’re talking about peas, lettuce, spinach, garlic, cilantro, onions, and beets. These vegetables will sow in colder soil and can withstand cool temperatures in the evening while growing.

Of course, a pop of color would be particularly lovely right now. Here are some cold-hardy annual flowers that will bring color and energy to your yard. Try planting a couple of pansies, snapdragons, violas, and primulas. These flowers can be put directly into the ground and they’re hardy enough to manage through colder temperatures. You can also use this time to transplant your perennial plants because large growth hasn’t started;  splitting the root and replanting in other places will give it the proper time to re-grow and multiply the size of perennial plants.

Beware the Elements

Tuck them in

Calgary and area are zone 3b and 4 on the plant hardiness scale, meaning that May can still bring some unique and frosty weather. Some plants need to wait until the ground is just a little bit warmer to thrive properly. If there are frost warnings throughout the month, place a bedsheet or tarp over the top of surfaced plants, or make sure the plants are in a sheltered area for those colder evenings.

You Are Ready!

The sun is out and temperatures are rising, which makes us eager to get out and get started. Now is the time to tidy that yard, stain that fence, repair that deck and get that ground ready without risking damage to any plants. And when that green does begin to pop up, you’ll be able to sit back and watch the world in full bloom.

Meet Your Neighbours in Lanark

Meet Your Neighbours

We’re welcoming Lanark homeowners Andreu and Marjorie to the neighbourhood! We asked them some questions about choosing their home in the community of Lanark.

What were your priorities when choosing a community?

We were looking for a place with space to breathe, a place with lots of “green” and with lots of natural light.

What influenced your decision to purchase your home?

We loved the space, natural light and the quality finishes in and out the home. We loved that there was a backyard and that the garage was separate.

How did you come to learn about Lanark Landing?

Marjorie loves walking and we got to know all of Airdrie. We came around one day to walk around the ponds near where our home was even though at the time it wasn’t built yet. When we started looking for a new place, I knew where to search.

Why did you choose Lanark Landing?

It’s a very nice community, with lots of parks and near really nice ponds to walk around. We like the fact that schools are nearby as well.

What’s your favourite part about the Lanark community?

The parks and ponds. We love walking and it’s a very “walkable” community.

What are you most excited about in your new home?

It’s our first home we own. We love the fact that we have a garage, backyard and a very nice porch. We love it as well as it’s very roomy and lots of natural light floods the house all day.

Meet Your Neighbour in Lanark

Meet Your Neighbour

We’re welcoming Lanark homeowner LeeAnn Fries to the neighbourhood and congratulating her on her home purchase with McKee Homes! We asked LeeAnn a few questions about why she chose to Live Big in Lanark.

Why did you choose to live in Lanark Landing?

When I was making the decision to build it was the perfect timing for me to find the New Lanark Landing area. It is as if the whole timing of my build was meant to happen for me.  I did have a few criteria that needed to be met for me to start a new build though. One of them was that I wanted a brand new area that was new and full of hype, I like to have a busy daily life so the neighborhood that I live in needs to match my lifestyle. The other was that when I heard McKee Homes was building a five-plex, well that spoke to me instantaneously. I am a single mom on my own and the amount of space that these townhouses were showing was just perfect for me. The McKee Homes 5 Plex shows like a traditional British terraced house. The brick adds character and warmth, the size of the windows are perfectly modern, and the 9 foot ceilings make my new townhome feel very spacious. I get to come home every night to my  modern/traditional new townhome and I feel so happy that I have chosen Lanark Landing to be my new neighborhood.

LeeAnn chose The Lifford floorplan by McKee Homes.

What’s your favourite part about the Lanark community?

I have to say that my favorite part of the Lanark Landing area is the continuous trails and the views in some of the lower inside trails leading into Kings Heights. They are quite stunning at night, especially over this past holiday season. I can feel a sense of warmth from this new community, and a safe feeling for all of the families living in this new community. There is always a hello spoken when I am passing anyone on my weekly walks.

McKee’s is offering immediate and fall 2021 possessions on their two-storey townhomes, starting in the low $300s. Click here for more information.

2021 Home Trends

2021 Home Trends

This year, happiness at home tops our priority list as we continue to shelter in place and look for ways to curate comfy living spaces. It’s no surprise that the trends for 2021 focus on things like simplicity, serenity, organization and multi-use spaces. We’ve rounded up our favourite trends that you can incorporate into your new home in Lanark.

Colours of the Year

Colour institutions are releasing their Colours of the Year for 2021. Each year, home builders and interior designers look to these picks to draw inspiration for their designs.

One of the leading authorities on colour are the people at Pantone. They have declared Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, a sunny yellow, as their 2021 colour choices. According to the Pantone Colour Institute, “these colours reflect what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for.”

The Color Guild, the paint world’s global color authority, has a more subtle pick for its colour of the year in Simple Serenity – a soft blue that it calls “the color of home, comfort and possibility in one heavenly hue.”

While paint brand Benjamin Moore is going with a bit bolder Aegean Teal. “Intriguing, balanced, and deeply soothing, Aegean Teal creates natural harmony.”

One thing’s for sure, the chosen colours will certainly inspire calm and serenity in any space.

Livable Luxury

Our homes have become our haven to organize, arrange, and decorate, more than ever. As we move indoors and take to our social channels to express ourselves, it’s no surprise that our attention has become more and more directed towards our living spaces. With that, the trend of livable luxury comes squarely into focus.

We don’t just need spaces that look good anymore (think formal living room with antique furnishings). We now require our beautiful spaces to function in new ways. In 2021, re-think your spaces and look for:

  • Furniture that can play double duty
  • Storage to put your work away at the end of a long day at your home office
  • Accents, decor and furniture that are not only beautiful but versatile and durable

Indoor Plants

Indoor plants have been a staple in homes for many years, and 2021 will be no different. The benefits of growing plants in your home impacts both your physical and mental health. If you want to liven up your space (figuratively and literally), just add plants.

Growing plants indoors will improve air quality, ground you in nature even while indoors, and caring for them triggers many positive reactions in the brain. Not to mention, they are natural art!

Our top picks for low maintenance, indoor plants are:

  • The Snake Plant
    • Snake plants thrive in indirect light and require watering only when their soil is dry. Talk about low-maintenance!
  • Air Plants & Succulents
    • Possibly the easiest plants to maintain, air plants and succulents look great in a terrarium. But don’t forget about them completely! They do require spraying or soaking once in a while.
  • Aloe Vera Plant
    • We love that these plants play double duty by providing moisturizing and healing aloe from its juicy leaves. Place them in direct sunlight and water weekly.
  • Rubber Plants
    • Don’t let the name fool you… these plants are real and are one of the top air-cleaning plants available.

Talk to your local garden centre for more ideas and complete care instructions for any of your plant friends.

Multi-Purpose Spaces

In 2020, our living spaces transformed and performed in ways that they never had before, with rooms serving multiple purposes. Living rooms became offices, dining rooms and kitchens served as classrooms, and bedrooms suddenly became places to work out as well as sleep.

2021 is the year to get creative with your spaces and reimagine what each room can be. Our builder group in Lanark has taken an active role in evolving their floorplans to meet the needs of homeowners in this new normal. While we place more and more expectations on what our homes can be, our builder group will help you meet them. Find a showhome and speak with a sales representative to bring your dream home to life.
